پیشرفت سریع فنّاوری اطلاعات، تأثیرگذاری شگرف آن در حوزه‌های یادگیری و ترکیب آن با نظریه‌های تعلیم و تربیت، حوزه‌ای جدید و میان‌رشته‌ای به نام «یادگیری الکترونیکی» را پدید آورده است. در ایران نیز از سال ۱۳۸۶ جمعی از متخصصان علوم تربیتی و فنّاوری اطلاعات با برگزاری کنفرانس‌های سالیانه‌ی «یادگیری الکترونیکی» بر آن شدند تا با ایجاد انجمنی علمی، محیطی منسجم و هم‌افزا را برای توسعه‌ی این عرصه‌ی جدید در کشور پدید آوردند. سرانجام این تلاش در سال ۱۳۹۰ به بار نشست و «انجمن یادگیری الکترونیکی ایران» با مجوّز کمیسیون انجمنهای علمی کشور تأسیس شد.
